We finally got a little cooler weather here in South Florida (high 60s – low 70s) and had the opportunity to make a few passes down the quarter mile in another 2012 RENNtech CLS63 at Palm Beach International Raceway.
To give some background, for 2012, AMG has upped the ante with the CLS63 by adding a new direct injected BiTurbo V8. The base 5.5 liter V8 Bi turbo is rated at 518 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque at the crank. In addition, AMG offers a “Performance Package” for those who want more. The “Performance Package” raises the boost on the turbos from 14.5 psi to 18.8 psi. As a result, horsepower jumps from 518 to 550 and torque from 516 lb-ft to 590.
We found out that Mercedes Benz was very conservative with its horsepower ratings, because on a Dynojet dynamometer at RENNtech, the new 5.5 liter V8 BiTurbo in base form made 556 horsepower and 550 ft-lbs of torque (473.24 horsepower and 468.22 ft/lbs of torque at the wheels). Note, this was the base CLS63 that is rated at 518 hp and 516 ft/lbs of torque. But this motor makes some serious power with a tune. With a RENNtech tune only, the base CLS63 made 669 horsepower and 734 ft-lbs of torque (569.13 horsepower and 624.94 ft/lbs of torque at the wheels).
Back to the dragstrip…… So, during the run in the video below, we had the opportunity to line up against a 2012 Nissan GTR. As everyone knows, not too many vehicles can hang with a Nissan GTR with its eyeball flattening 0 to 60 times. However, the big 4400 lb, 4 seater 2012 CLS63 more than held its own against Godzilla, running an amazing 11.21 @ 126.3 mph (203 kph) to the GTRs 11.11 @ 124 mph (200 kph). Enjoy.
RENNtech is proud to announce our latest ECU performance upgrade for the all new M278 engine currently in the C218 CLS 550, E550, CL550, S550 and other upcoming Mercedes models.
We have been hard at work refining our performance tune for these engines and are pleased to announce our latest ECU upgrade. It’s clear that the 4.6L V8 biturbo engine from Mercedes is certainly underrated from the factory and though our extensive testing and R&D; our ECU upgrade truly unleashes the performance lurking in the M278 engine.
RENNtech’s ECU upgrade for the M278 offers huge gains across the entire RPM range; increasing crank performance numbers an additional 70 HP and 80 TQ. This translates to an astonishing 530 HP and 606 lb/ft of torque at the crank! These numbers are factored at a conservative 15% drive train loss.
The performance increase is instantly noticeable at the bottom end and continues throughout the biturbo engines broad powerband.
Our CLS 550 stage 1 ECU upgrade is available now for $2,740. For additional information, visit out product webpage by clicking here:

The HLS 2 (Hydraulic Lift System) provides additional road clearance for lowered vehicles by raising the front axle suspension via the push of a button. When expanded, a range of up to 45 mm of lift is produced, thereby helping sport cars avoid road clearance difficulties such as speed bumps, road construction, etc.
The hydraulic cylinder unit is located on the coilover body between spring perch and spring on the front axle for vehicles equipped with our high performance sport suspension. The advantage of a hydraulic system is that there is no compression (motion) of the extended cylinder unit (resulting in no unwanted additional suspension movement) while driving. The system contained within the rear of the vehicle and is actuated by a push button on the optional remote (there by eliminating the need for any interior wiring).
Here is a video of the suspension in action:

RENNtech, one of the premiere Mercedes tuners in the world, recently strapped a new 2012 Mercedes CLS63 V8 BiTurbo to their dyno and the results are impressive. For background, Mercedes Benz has dropped the CLS63′s naturally aspirated 6.2 liter V8 engine (rated at 507 hp and 465 lb-ft) that debuted in 2007 in favor of a smaller 5.5 liter BiTurbo V8. Although the outgoing 6.2 was a high winder, we longed for the torque of the 5.4 liter Kompressor motor (E55, S55, SL55, CL55) the 6.2 replaced.
Well, our performance prayers have been answered. The new direct injected BiTurbo V8 is STRONG as the dyno result below confirm. The base 5.5 liter V8 Bi turbo is rated at 518 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque at the crank. AMG offers a “Performance Package” for those who want more. The “Performance Package” raises the boost on the turbos from 14.5 psi to 18.8 psi. As a result, horsepower jumps from 518 to 550 and torque from 516 lb-ft to 590.
Mercedes is generally conservative with its power figures, and the dyno numbers confirm that they did it again with the new CLS63. On a Dynojet dynamometer at RENNtech, the new 5.5 liter V8 BiTurbo in base form made 556 horsepower and 550 ft-lbs of torque (473.24 horsepower and 468.22 ft/lbs of torque at the wheels). Note, this was the base CLS63 that is rated at 518 hp and 516 ft/lbs of torque. In sum, the new CLS63 made approximately 40 horsepower and 40 ft/lbs of torque more than the factory claims. But hold on, this motor makes some serious power with a RENNtech tune. Hartmut Feyhl and his team at RENNtech have spent untold man hours doing research and development on the new 5.5 liter BiTurbo. As a result, they have developed a tune that is nothing short of astonishing. With a tune only, the same 2012 CLS63 made 669 horsepower and 734 ft-lbs of torque (569.13 horsepower and 624.94 ft/lbs of torque at the wheels). That, my friends, is huge power. The CLS63 power numbers with RENNtech’s proprietary tune are in the territory of Mercedes’ $300,000 V12 BiTurbo SL65 Black Series.
2012 Mercedes CLS63 AMG Dyno Graph – Road Test TV
According to Mercedes, the new 2012 CLS63 equipped with AMG’s seven-speed “Speedshift” MCT transmission will rip from 0 – 60 mph in 4.4 seconds with the lower boost motor. The “AMG Performance Package” cuts a tenth and gets to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. Top speed also goes up from 155 to 186 mph with the AMG Performance Package. We believe these numbers are conservative as well since we are aware that the 2012 CLS63 will run the quarter mile (stock) in 12.0 at 122 mph.
With the RENNtech modifications pushing the power to almost 670 horsepower and 740 ft/lbs of torque, it is safe to assume that the new CLS63 will run the quarter mile in the low 11s at close to 130 mph. As soon as we can get the new CLS63 to the drag strip, we’ll post the performance results.
RENNtech is proud to announce our latest proprietary exhaust component for the CL63 ( C216), our stainless steel long tube headers. RENNtech T-304 stainless headers are purge welded and feature top of the line big tube 2″ diameter tubing. The headers and high quality 200 cell tri-metal sport cats are then ceramic coated to reduce latent heat in the engine compartment as well as combat against thermal stress.
Our long tube headers produce an incredible exhaust note and bump the already potent CL 63′s performance an additional 25 hp and 13 lb/ft of torque at the wheels.
Here is our latest video featuring the CL63 headers:
