Tonight we were given another opportunity to test a 2011 BMW X5M. This time, the muscular Bavarian SUV got a little shot in the arm from the tuners at RENNtech. The crew at RENNtech installed a low boost tune intended to run safely on California’s 91 octane fuel. Accordingly, the tune is very conservative. On our way to the track, we could tell that the X5M had more power. The turbos spooled faster and torque throughout the rpm range was noticeably increased.
Once at the drag strip, it was clear that the X5M responded to the RENNtech tune since it laid down an impressive 12.26 @ nearly 112 mph (180 km/h). It is important to know that the weather tonight was around 85 – 87 degrees with over 90 percent humidity. If you recall, this is the same truck that ran 12.70 @ 109 stock. That’s a .44 second and 3 mph gain with a mild 91 octane low boost tune. We’ve been told that more aggressive tunes are available from RENNtech which unlock quite a bit more horsepower and torque. We’ve also been told that we”ll get a chance to test the X5M with the more aggressive stage 1 and stage 2 93 octane tunes. We can’t wait and will keep you posted.
